RV Experiences and Memorable Meals on the Road

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

For those of you who have considered the RV experience, we will start with the basics that must be addressed, to determine if this life style will work for you. You must first realize that you and your family will be living in close proximity for long hours, in a small space, while you are on the road and at camping sites. Compatibility will be challenged and all parties need to consider the ramifications of encounters of the close kind. Some of the other issues to be considered, if you are seriously thinking about "hitting the road" are:

If you had not had a great deal of experience in RV's, it would be prudent to rent a smaller Class C for a trial trip, to get your feet wet. Typically these rent by the week and may include all the provisions & bedding required, with you only having to furnish food & toiletries. It certainly makes sense to spend $1500 +/- to rent a nice RV for a week, than to spend $130,000 or more for an RV and then discover you did not enjoy the experience. Go to RV shows and talk to people about the advantages of Pop up tents, Trailers, Fifth Wheels, Cab over Campers, Class A, Class B and Class C. Talk to anyone you know that has enjoyed the RV experience, or didn't and why. If you rented a Class C and liked it, rent a Class A or Diesel Pusher next time, so that you have a solid base of comparison before deciding to purchase. Once you decide you like the life style and commit to the type of RV you want and can afford, be aware that they typically suffer massive depreciation once you drive a new RV off the lot, so you can save 20 - 30% on a 1 to 2 year old RV and still obtain extended warranty coverage, through Good Sam for up to 10 years or 80,000 miles. An extended warranty is a must, as repairs on RV's can get very expensive. Planning trips, once you have your RV, can be a lot of fun for you and your family. All you need is a good Road Atlas and Camping guide, with all the camping facilities available. A good GPS is an excellent investment and will save you untold grief while trying to navigate through downtown Seattle, for example, during rush hour. Cooking, food preparation and meal planning, while on the road, is another major challenge. Typically the average RV has a small 6 - 8 cubic foot refrigerator, which works either on electricity or propane. Now that's not a lot of space, even for 2 people, so prudent planning is required. We often prepare a number of frozen dishes, which can simply be heated up once we reach our destination, after a long day of driving. I plan on 250 - 300 miles/day and like to arrive at my destination before 4 PM, to avoid traffic and always call ahead to reserve a space.

In conclusion, exploring the RV life style can be an exciting journey that will provide memorable experiences, never to be forgotten. Cooking and meal preparation, on the road, offers challenges and rewards for those of you who are creative and venturesome. We have attempted, in this article, to provide you with some helpful ideas that will assist in assessing your interest in pursuing the RV lifestyle.
