The 6 Steps of Tiling a Floor

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

After you have done the hard part of picking out your tile and grout, then you get into the extremely hard part the install. Installing a tile or stone floor can be broken up into 6 parts: the demolition, the prep, the layout, setting the full tiles, cutting it in and grouting. Follow these simple (yet completely difficult) steps and you will be fine.

Step 1 Demolition

This can incorporate many different types of tear out. This can include anything from tearing out tile to pulling out 70 year old laminate. One thing remains is that it all needs to come out. One must start with a good base to install a floor that will be down for years to come.

Step 2 Preparation

After all of the old flooring was removed there can still be a pretty big mess. People do not realize that any dirt or soot left on a floor can be disastrous in the tiling process. The best advised I can give is to take the extra time and wipe over the concrete with water and a sponge to remove all unwanted contaminants.

Step 3 Layout

This is the step that a person really needs to take their time. This is what everyone is going to see for years to come. Taking proper measurements to make sure the tiles are going to lay square throughout the house and not have any small pieces cannot be stressed enough. Take the time to check the size of the pieces around the entire house. Nothing is worse than laying the last piece and figuring out you have a half in sliver right next to your front door.

Step 4 Full Tiles

This is step is the easiest to do but the hardest on your body. Rapid idly grabbing and sticking tiles to the floor all day can really give ones back a bit of an ach. Making sure the you have good knee pads is going to be the best advised during this step.

Step 5 Cutting in

After the full tiles are down all the edges between the walls need to have tiles cut and placed to fill the gap. This is going to be the most time consuming part in the entire flooring process. I personally like to start in the hardest areas such as a bathroom first, and then finish up in a nice wide open area such as a living room. This makes it a little easier since by the end of the day you are most likely to be wore out.

Step 6 Grout

This is the best part of the entire process, the last part. After you fill in the grout with a float all you need to do is wipe up the excess with a sponge. Giving the grout about 24 hours to dry and the entire process is complete.
