Maintaining the Beauty of Your Hardwood Floors

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 155

Hardwood Floors enhance the value, appearance, and feel of a home. It's important to maximize the durability and beauty of them. This is going to require normal care and maintenance. There are many elements that you should be aware of that can wreak havoc on wood floors. They also need to be cleaned correctly with the appropriate products.

Doormats or rugs should be placed at entrances to collect moisture, sand, grit, and other damaging substances. Using mats in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room is a good idea as well to avoid excess water getting on your hardwood floors. You should always use only colorfast and non-scratch carpeting or pads on your wood floors. Protect it from furniture legs, and don't walk on it with high-heeled shoes. Although wood floors do have effective UV inhibitors in their pre-finish; you should still not expose them to direct sunlight for long periods of time. If you own dogs, make sure you choose a hardwood floor that is harder and more durable like: oak, maple, cherry, or ash. Keep your dogs nails clipped, and don't put their water bowl directly on your wood floor.

The greater the traffic conditions, the greater the degree of maintenance that will be required. When you clean your wood floors, use a dust mop or vacuum (w/a soft accessory) to get dust, dirt, and grit off. An example of a dry mop that works well would be a Swiffer. Make sure you wash your dry mop to avoid a build up of dirt which you will then be redepositing onto your wood floor.

To clean sticky spots, use a soft, damp cloth to gently scrub the floor. Use a generic hardwood floor cleaner. Never use steel wool or other abrasive souring pads. If something is spilled, make sure you blot it up immediately with a dry cloth or slightly damp mop. Never use harsh detergents, abrasive cleaners, or corrosive chemicals on a wood floor. Abrasives act like sandpaper, and will degrade the wood faster than anything else will.

Hardwood floors should be washed daily, or at a minimum of once a week. Washing will remove fine dirt and dust that is not picked up by a dry mop. Fine dirt and dust left behind can make the floors slippery. Washing also removes residue from oil-based or water-based treatments. If you choose to use an oil-based mop treatment, make sure you don't use the mop until 24 hours after you put the treatment on. This will give the oil time to absorb, and the solvent carrier will evaporate. If you mop immediately, you will leave an oily residue on the floor which can make it slick, and your wood floor will retain dirt more, plus cause adhesion problems.

It is more advisable to use a water-based mop treatment. They can be used within hours without creating significant problems. Please note, you can't use a water-based treatment on unsealed wood floors. It will cause blackening, and raising of the grain. Also, constant use of alkaline cleaners will prematurely dull down the gloss of your wood floor.

A hardwood floor is an investment. It will enhance your home's value and appeal to buyers. So, make sure you treat it right.
