Choosing The Right Coloured Rugs - Balancing Design Needs With Practical Needs

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Rugs come in a beautiful array of colours, from vibrant reds and lime greens to soothing browns and deep blues. Of course, you want to choose rugs that are well-suited to your home and bring out the best of the rest of the decor. For many this means finding a colour that works perfectly in the room and suits their design concept. However, you also need to consider the practical implications of the rug colour you choose. Balancing these two factors is the key to choosing a rug colour you'll be happy with for a long time.

Design Implications Many interior decorators will recommend that your rug be your first purchase, and that you buy the rest of your furniture to match your rug. If you're starting from scratch and have no established colour scheme, make note of all the colours in each of the rugs you're considering. Is it a solid colour rug or a patterned rug? Identify the rug's colours on a colour wheel (you can find them at a local paint store or even online) and imagine the colour schemes you could create. The goal, of course, is to find a rug that inspires an appealing colour scheme.

If you already have a completed room and you're buying the rug to add that final touch, the same process applies, but in reverse. Look around the room you've designed and ask yourself what colours stand out. If you're worried about buying a rug that doesn't work with your present decor, you can start by creating a colour inventory. Make a list of all the colours currently in the room - this includes the walls, the floors, the furniture, and the curtains. Then use a colour wheel to determine which rug colours might work with your existing colours.

Practical Implications Think about how you will be using the room. If the rug is being placed in an entryway for example, you might want to avoid light coloured rugs (white, tan, light blue) that will show dirt easily. The same reasoning applies for rugs that will be placed in dining areas - it is inevitable that at some point, someone will spill some wine or misplace some spaghetti sauce! Save yourself the stress by thinking ahead and choosing a dark coloured rug in these situations. A patterned rug can also be a fantastic option, because a pattern can help disguise any dirt or small stains.

If you have a pet, consider them too! White cat hair will show up glaringly on black rugs and will drive you crazy. While your rug will need to be regularly vacuumed in order to keep it clean and get rid of pet hair, in between vacuums you'll be less bothered by the hair if it's camouflaged. With this in mind, dark carpets work well with dark-haired animals, and vice versa.

Keeping these two factors in mind should allow you to look at the available selection of rugs with a more discerning eye, understanding what colours will and won't work for your home and your life.
