Fishing in St Croix, US Virgin Islands

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 268

There is no better place to go fishing than in the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean, especially when the location is off of the island of St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. St. Croix offers so many opportunities for fishing with gamefish such as Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Tuna, King and Mahi Mahi. There are also inshore species such as Tarpon, Permit, Snook and Bonefish. There are many varied areas where these fish can be caught throughout the year. The Island, located approximately 40 miles to the South of St. Thomas has water as deep as 1000 feet just off its shores and has produced some world record fish over the years. These deep waters bring nutrients from the depths close to the Island and this in turn brings the fish that thrive on the abundance of food.

There are a few local charters services that can provide everything that is needed for the angler. They offer half day and full day trips which average around 4 hours for half day and 8 hours for full. One thing that sets St. Croix apart from most fishing destinations is that having the fishing grounds so close to the Island, the trip to and from the dock is greatly reduced and the angler has more time to fish and spends less time getting there. Most of the charter services can accommodate up to 4 or 5 anglers for offshore fishing and 3 to 4 anglers for inshore and nearshore fishing. Fishing charter services will supply all the needed tackle and bait for the trip that has been booked and in certain situations will provide food and drinks. This can be an additional charge and is usually only done by request. Make sure to check with the boat captain and ask for all pricing upfront before embarking on your trip. Once your out on the water the Captain and/or his crew will attend to all the needs of rigging and baiting and will provide you with instructions on how the fish will react to the bait presentation.

One last item of importance is the fact that you will not be able to keep all of what you catch. The restrictions and licensing for fishing in the USVI are strict and most times the angler may only keep a small portion of the days catch. Again, check with your Captain to find out his or her procedures.
