Bass Fishing - Three Things to Consider for the Beginner

April 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 171

1. Times to Fish

The most effective times to fish are late at night, or extremely early on in the morning. Bass are most energetic over these periods. There's a single caveat to this. When the weather conditions are cloudy or perhaps the surface of the water is unusually murky, bass will feed in the mid-afternoon several hours instead.

If you do not have that secret spot already, the next decision is obviously to pick a body of water to fish. Search for local lakes, rivers and waterways and visit bass fishing forums and sites to evaluate where they are biting. Once you have a location, the next decision is whether to fish from the bank or in a boat.

2. Picking a Location to Fish

If you are boat fishing, the technology of the fish finder is a relatively good substitute for a local fishing guide. Bass usually congregate toward the edge of natural cover and rarely in open water. Take your time and use your trolling motor so you do not noise pollute the fish away from you!

Picking a spot to fish from land is a little more tricky as your mobility is a lot less limited than on a boat. Pick an area that is quiet, has access to lots of natural cover and is also comfortable for you. For example if you are hunting the elusive Guadalupe bass in Texas in July, make sure that you have a shaded spot so you don't collapse of heat exhaustion!

Observing natural wildlife is also strangely a good indicator of fish activity, particularly in coastal regions. There is typically a correlation between the bird density and fish density in any natural area.

3. Using the Right Equipment

With today's bass fishing rod and reel technology, it is hard to go wrong with equipment selection. Most people will start with a rod and reel combination from a reputable manufacturer such as Daiwa, then determine their preferences on rod flexibility, length and reel type and usability and apply that knowledge to a subsequent purchase of more advanced equipment.

Tackle and Lures are also an important selection to consider, make sure that the hooks you use are razor sharp, this will make the chances of you landing the bass you catch much higher and decrease the probability of damaging the bass. Let's face it, if you are not eating it, why hurt it?

If you are a complete bass fishing newbie, we recommend going with a spinner combo set, this is fun as you are always in motion and busy, the only downside is that if you are fishing the right areas, you WILL snag your line. Think of this as a cost of being in the fishing business!

If fishing is more of an excuse to get out the house and drink a few cold beers, you have already won!
