A Short Guide to Trout Fly Fishing in Ireland

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 176

If you are going to Ireland to fish, it is possible to find some areas that are open to all legal methods. However, fly fishing is typically favored by most anglers. For trout fly fishing the rivers in Ireland could be subdivided into limestone and acidic. The nymph or upstream dry fly is usually the best choice in limestone rivers but when there are plenty of fish that are rising, you may find it hard to choose what bait to use. Wet trout fly fishing is generally favored for acidic streams - typically across and downstream. For the past several seasons, the more popular choice is Czech nymphing since it is an effective method of catching fish from all Irish rivers.

From the last days of June, the evening rise is of vital importance. Rises during daytime typically decreases during summer but starting early evening to around 11pm, there is a compensation in the time of intensive sport. The rise starts at around 6pm with trout moving to tiny fly like pale wateries. The blue winged olive then takes flight, bringing up heavier fish which feed into the dusk. Sedge hatch then appears, making the trout rise until past midnight, beginning in July.

On most loughs, all kinds of legal angling methods can be used although fly fishing is typically the method that is used. It is vital that you find out first what methods are allowed on individual fisheries. Take not that for catching large amount of fish from loughs, trolling is the method that is most effective every year.

Like the rivers, the productivity of the loughs is affected by the geology underneath, which also influences the kind of invertebrate life that thrives there. Lough trout are feeding mostly on shrimp and hog louse in the beginning of the year and will rise for the initial duck fly hatches. Loughs in Ireland are well-known for their mayfly hatches, which start from April to July. The sedges come during the warm summer months. Near the season's end, olives and daddy long legs can give the trout a final feast, which can produce great water top sport. Some trout can become entirely focused on shoals of fry.

Trout fly fishing on certain loughs like the midlands Co. Westmeath and Lough Ennell in Mullingar can be done until the early parts of October, and though the hatches may be scant, the fish could be very active.

To get the most out of your trout fly fishing experience on the loughs, you need to have a boat, which will allow you to cover the waters properly. You should also get the services of a guide. Such angling guides are very important in trout fly fishing. Lough Corrib for instance is 6.3 miles at its widest and 27 miles long. The surface is composed of around 70 square miles. It would take you a few lifetimes to familiarize yourself fully with the area. However, boat hire and angling guides are available on every major trout fly fishing waters in Ireland.
