When It Comes To Aquariums - Size Does Matter!

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 165

Introduction

When you go to select an aquarium for your house, size does matter. There are a few things you need to consider when selecting the size of your aquarium.

Some things you need to consider are proper preparation of your tank, location, and your experience.

Proper Preparation

Proper preparation of your tank is a must even before you put your first teaspoon of water in. If you have a small tank, like one that is 15-gallons or less, this is not much of an issue.

But if you have a larger tank, like my 75-gallon tank, proper preparation is a must. Because once you put that water in your tank and you did not prepare properly, you will have to empty all the water out and start over.

Part of proper preparation means to leak test your tank before you put the substrate and plants in. Nothing can be more frustrating than to put your substrate and plants in and then as you fill the tank you notice a leak.

If this is the case, then there is nothing you can do but drain the tank and repair the leak.

Another aspect of preparing your tank is to wash everything you will put in the tank. This includes rinsing the inside of your tank with warm water.

The most important thing to rinse is all the substrate that you will put in your tank. Rinse it with warm water to remove the dirt that is in it. You will be surprised how dirty your aquarium water will be if you do not do this.

Location

For a small 10 to 15-gallon tank this is not too much of a problem. But if the size of your tank is large, then where you will put your aquarium will more than likely become permanent.

My 75-gallon aquarium has close to 100 pounds of substrate and has about 650 pounds of water in it. You just do not go moving this around everyday. So when I selected my location I knew the spot had to be more or less permanent.

Experience

If this is your first tank, then you will want to start off small, 10 to 15-gallon, till you receive more experience. But if you are already experienced, then you can handle a larger sized aquarium.

If you are new to this hobby and you do your research on setting up and maintaining an aquarium, then you could probably handle a larger sized aquarium. My first aquarium was 75-gallons and I was quite successful at it, because I did my homework.
