The Cost Of A Fresh Water Aquarium

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

Introduction

Thinking about installing a freshwater aquarium and want to know how much it will cost? I recently just installed a 75-gallon fresh water aquarium for my friend; the initial expense is what costs the most. After that, you can operate an aquarium for peanuts.

Cost Of Your Aquarium

Depending on the type and size of your aquarium will determine the overall cost. The 75-gallon aquarium I designed and installed for my friend cost close to $500 just for the tank and the stand to place it on. The stand needed to be heavy-duty because the aquarium when completed weighs close to 1000 pounds.

Then because of the size of the aquarium I needed to have more of everything. For example, I needed to have three filters to handle the amount of water I placed in the aquarium. For three of these filters I spent over $125.

I also needed a heater that was of sufficient capacity to keep my aquarium water at a constant temperature. I paid close to $40 for a heater, to keep my tank at a constant 75-degrees.

The substrate I used was gravel for ease of cleaning. I put in about 75 pounds of substrate at a cost of close to $100.

Ornaments and plants were about $75.

The cheapest part of this activity surprised me. The fish I obtained cost between two and three dollars each. I did obtain three African Featherfin Catfish at about $15 dollars each. The total cost for my fish that includes seven Tiger Barbs, the three African Featherfin Catfish, three Kissing Gourami, three Blue Gourami and two Plecostomus was about $75.

I also had to get some lighting for the aquarium, not only is it required for my live plants but the fish need lighting to prevent stressing them out. This lighting system cost close to $200.

An aerator to ensure the aquarium receives the required amount of oxygen was purchase at about $75.

I then purchased some miscellaneous items such as water conditioner, a chemical test kit, plant and fish food, all for an additional $50.

Total

The total cost for this 75-gallon fresh water aquarium was $985. Now this may not be very scientific, but if you are going to install a fresh water aquarium, each gallon of water will cost you about $13.

So if you want a 50-gallon aquarium, expect to pay about $650.00.
