The Average Cost of a Saltwater Aquarium

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 131

Introduction

So you are looking at developing a saltwater aquarium. Well you will need two things, money and money. Creating a saltwater aquarium is not cheap and it will cost you a lot of money. Here is a break down on some of the costs associated with creating a saltwater aquarium.

The Fish

If you are a practicing Aquarist, then you know you have to set up the environment first. If all you have done is maintained a fresh water aquarium, then you are in for a shock when you go to purchase a saltwater fish for the saltwater aquarium you established.

Fresh water fish cost, on average, about two dollars or less, but a saltwater fish can run ten times or more. For example the Dwarf Angelfish cost, on sale, $19.99. It goes up from there and some fish will cost you a couple of hundred dollars each.

Equipment

When I set up my 75-gallon fresh water aquarium the initial layout was around 650 dollars. The initial layout for a saltwater aquarium is going to be much more, you could spend up to 2000 dollars or more depending on the size of the tank.

Here is where the major cost is going to be:

  • Protein Skimmer - Unlike freshwater aquariums, saltwater aquariums will need a protein skimmer to remove organic wastes before they break down into toxins. These can cost close to 200 dollars.
  • Live Rock - This is not actually rock that is alive, but is dead coral that contains calcium carbonate skeletons which will be the biological filter for your tank. This will cost about 3 dollars per pound and you will need one pound per gallon of water. For a 75-gallon aquarium it will be about 220 dollars.
  • Tank and Stand - For a 75-gallon tank and stand it will cost you 500 dollars or more for a good one.

With just the basics in equipment you are close to 1000 dollars for a 75-gallon saltwater tank. Compared to my freshwater tank, everything including filters, fish, decorations, plants, etc cost only about 650 dollars.

Maintenance

Once you establish your saltwater aquarium, the maintenance is much more than a freshwater aquarium. You will not be able to use tap water but will have to buy distilled water to put in your aquarium at about 50 cents a gallon.

Plus there is the expense of adding salt to your tank to replace that which is lost when you replace the water.

There is also more time and effort on your part to keep your saltwater fish happy.

Conclusion

The cost of a saltwater aquarium could cost you twice as much as it would cost you for a freshwater aquarium. Though a saltwater aquarium is pretty, I would recommend a freshwater aquarium, much cheaper.
