Salt Water VS Fresh Water - Which One To Establish?

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 137

Introduction

If you are thinking about putting an aquarium in your home or office you have many decisions to make. You have to decide on the size of the aquarium, location, the fish you want and much more. But the biggest decision is to decide if you should have a freshwater aquarium or a saltwater aquarium.

Here are some of the advantages of a freshwater aquarium and the advantages of a saltwater aquarium.

Maintenance

The first thing to address is how much maintenance will I have to expend on having an aquarium. Believe it or not both are not that much trouble, in fact the most work you will have to do is establishing the aquarium.

Besides feeding your fish, you will spend about an hour a week doing water change out, cleaning algae in the tank, checking water quality and trimming your live plants if you have any.

Advantage Of A Freshwater Aquarium

One of the biggest advantages of a freshwater aquarium over a saltwater aquarium is the cost. A freshwater aquarium is cheaper than a saltwater tank. For example my 75-gallon freshwater aquarium cost about 650 dollars.

A saltwater aquarium will cost more because of more equipment that is needed, fish are more expensive and the type of saltwater tank you want ( live rock, reef, etc) will raise the cost. If you establish a smaller tank, 29-gallons, it will cost about the same as a 75-gallon fresh water tank.

Another advantage to a freshwater tank is the maintenance of the water. In a freshwater tank you do not have to worry about adding salt to your tank and keeping it at proper concentrations. But you still have to keep toxic chemicals, such as ammonia and nitrites, out.

Advantages Of A Saltwater Aquarium

One of the big advantages of having a saltwater aquarium is its beauty. The fish you can put in this type of tank are much more colorful than freshwater fish. Plus if you use live rock or coral will help enhance the beauty of your tank.

With a saltwater aquarium you will also have a larger selection of invertebrates to choose from.

Conclusion

If you are looking at establishing an aquarium you can choose from either freshwater or saltwater. Looking at the advantages of each I would choose a saltwater aquarium even though it is more expensive.

The reason I would choose saltwater is because of the beauty and you will have more choices on the types of marine life you can put in your tank.
