List of Freshwater Fish Great For Your Aquarium

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 219

Introduction

There are many different types of aquarium freshwater fish you can buy. But which one do you buy. Here is a list of fish that would be great for your first aquarium.

Selecting Your Fish

When you go to the pet store you see all these fish swimming around in their little fish bowls and you wonder which one to buy. Well if you are reading this, I would assume you are new to fish aquariums so this would be you first fish.

What you want to be sure of is that you have established your aquarium correctly by ensuring everything you put in your aquarium has been rinsed with warm water. This includes the substrate, all decorations, and even the plants. Also, ensure you have put bacteria in and allowed them to colonize over three or four weeks and your nitrogen cycle is complete. If so you may be ready for that first fish.

When I bought my first fish for my 75-gallon aquarium, I bought semi-aggressive fish that were easy to care for.

List Of Fish

My first fish were listed as easy to care for in that they could live in an environment that was flexible. That is the pH could vary slightly and the temperature could be flexible.

Here are the fish I found that could be kept by a novice like I used to be:

3 Kissing Gourami - These were the first fish I bought. They are pink in color and pucker their mouths like they are kissing. It is actually an aggressive action between them but they do it all the time. They rise to the surface now and then to get a gulp of air.

3 Blue or Three Spot Gourami - From the same species as the Kissing Gourami, these are bluish in color and have two black spots on their side. The third black spot is the eye. They also rise to the surface to grab a gulp of air.

7 Tiger Barbs - These are schooling fish and move around very fast. If you purchase these, get at least six or more since anything less would cause them to be stressed and lead to their death.

3 African Featherfin Catfish - These fish are rather shy and only come out of hiding when it is time for dinner. So you should have some cover for them to hide in. They are bottom feeders and will keep your aquarium free of algae.

Conclusion

This is a list of fish that are easy to care for and should be considered as part of your first aquarium. Remember when you buy your first fish introduce them slowly, about three a week so as not to upset the aquariums environment. If you select Tiger Barb, make them your last fish to put in, and put all six or seven in at once.
