How to Keep a Saltwater Tank Clear and Safe For Its Inhabitants

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

Introduction

Keeping a saltwater aquarium in your home or office is one of the best things you can do for yourself. They are not only beautiful to look at but can have a soothing effect on you. But one of your challenges is to keep your saltwater aquarium clear and safe for the live organisms you will put in your aquarium.

Keeping a saltwater aquarium is a bit more work than keeping a freshwater aquarium. So here is what you need to do to keep your saltwater aquarium clear and safe.

Aquarium Design- The first thing that you need to do in order to keep your aquarium clear and safe is in the initial design.

Use a substrate that will not lift up from the bottom of your tank by the fish or the motion of the water caused by the aerator, protein skimmer or filter.

To prevent toxins and other material that is found in tap water from entering your tank, use reverse osmosis water to make your salt water for the initial fill and replacement water.

Maintenance- When you have your saltwater aquarium up and running, the primary task you have to do to keep your tank clear and safe is to develop a routine maintenance task. This maintenance should consist of as a minimum:

  • Clean Filters- When I do my weekly change out of 10% of my tanks water, I also check the filters and clean or replace them as necessary.
  • Vacuum- It is important to vacuum the substrate at the same time you do your weekly change out of water. This will help remove the debris and fish waste that builds up between cleanings.
  • Police Your Tank- Again when you do the water change out, police your tank and remove dead plants or trim your plants dead leaves.
  • Clean Decorations- About once a month I remove the decorations I have in my tank and clean them with warm water. Never use a detergent to clean items in your aquarium for it may adversely affect your fish.
  • Clean Glass- Using a scraper, remove the algae that will build up on your aquarium's glass. You may want to invest in some snails or hermit crabs to help you keep the algae down. You can also keep the algae down by using a timer on your light. Six to ten hours of light is all your aquarium should need.

Conclusion

Following the above steps will go a long way towards keeping your saltwater aquarium clear and safe for the inhabitants.
