How To Be Mother Nature - Get A Freshwater Aquarium

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

Introduction

Keeping an aquarium is a big job. In fact, when you take on the job of keeping a freshwater aquarium, you take on the role of Mother Nature. Here is why and how you can fill her shoes.

When your fish are in their natural environment they depend on Mother Nature to take care of them. But when you put freshwater fish in your aquarium, you take on the role of Mother Nature and your fish become dependent on you as the new Mother Nature.

It may seem to leave you with a lot of weight on your shoulders, but it is really not that hard. You will just need to know what she does and how you can take her place.

Environment - Mother Nature actually maintains the environment that is ideal for your fish. This means she will flush the toxins by providing periodic rains to increase the flow in the river or flood the ponds to get rid of the toxins. Plus this periodic rain will allow decay matter in the water to keep the pH constant and help keep the temperature at the proper point for your fish.

Your job is the same, you may not be able to provide the rains to do this task, but you can provide bacteria to remove the chemicals that are toxic to your fish, such as ammonia and nitrites.

Then to remove the other wastes, you will need to change out 10% of the water weekly. This change out of the water will also remove nitrates and keep your pH constant.

For temperature control put a heater in the aquarium that will keep the aquarium water at a constant temperature.

Food - The food your fish receive in their natural environment comes from, guess what, Mother Nature. Now you need to provide that food so make sure you know what type of food your fish need. Here are some of the feeding classifications of freshwater fish:

  • Carnivores - I would stay away from these, they may eat your smaller fish since they eat live food.
  • Herbivorous - These fish will eat your plants. You may want to feed them spinach and lettuce. But plants help keep the nitrates down so I would leave these fish to the real Mother Nature.
  • Omnivore - These fish will eat anything, plants, algae tabs and fish flakes. These are the fish I have and if you keep them well fed, but not too much, they will leave your plants alone. I throw some spinach in every now and then.
  • Limnivores - These are bottom feeders and they eat the bacteria and algae in your tank. They are good at keeping your tank clean.

Mating - Mother Nature provides the ideal conditions for your fish to mate. If you want to mate your fish do some research. Some fish will be nest builders, others will just scatter their eggs and some will need to be stimulated by needing the same conditions as a rain storm.

Conclusion

When you establish a freshwater aquarium, you are taking the place of Mother Nature. You will need to do what she does to keep your fish happy but you will find that being Mother Nature is a snap.
