Decision Time - Saltwater Or Freshwater Aquarium

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

Introduction

When you decided to establish an aquarium you have two choices. Should you put up a saltwater aquarium or a freshwater aquarium? Here are the pros and cons of each type of tank.

Saltwater Aquarium Pros and Cons

There are several advantages in developing and maintaining a saltwater tank. The pros are:

  • Fish - There are more colorful fish that you can choose from as compared to freshwater fish.
  • Variety - There are a variety of different types of aquatic animals you can choose from as opposed to a freshwater aquarium. Besides fish there are invertebrates like sea urchins you can have along with live coral and crustaceans.
  • Challenge - If you are a person who loves a challenge, you will enjoy the success you will have when you create a successful saltwater aquarium.

There are several major cons that are associated with a saltwater aquarium:

  • Cost - The cost of fish and other aquatic animals is much more expensive than the fish and snails in the other aquarium. For a successful saltwater aquarium, the tank must be must larger because of the larger fish it must hold. Also there is a lot more equipment needed for a saltwater aquarium.
  • Maintenance - You will need to perform more maintenance on this type of aquarium in order to be successful.
  • Location - Because of the large size of the aquarium and the equipment needed you will need a large space to put it which may be difficult to find.
  • Now for a freshwater aquarium the pros are:
  • Maintenance - It is a lot easier to maintain a freshwater aquarium than a saltwater aquarium. If you set it up right, your bacteria colony in the tank will keep your tank clean along with the filters.
  • Low Cost - After the initial layout, the cost of this type of aquarium can be maintained for peanuts. My 75-gallon fresh water aquarium cost about 650 dollars to establish, after that cost runs about 20 dollars a month.
  • Fish - Though the colors are limited in the fish you can have, they are relatively cheap.

The cons of having a freshwater aquarium are in my opinion none when compared to having a saltwater aquarium. Of course I may be biased in this since I own a freshwater aquarium.

Conclusion

If you are trying to decide between a saltwater aquarium and a freshwater aquarium pick the freshwater one. They are cheaper and easier to maintain than a saltwater tank.
