Aquariums - Yes You Can Name Your Pet Fish

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

Introduction

Fish may seem impossible to name as individuals, yet I have named all of mine and can recognize them as individuals. If you do not own fish or are just getting started, here are the methods I use to name my fish.

How To Recognize Individuals

You may think it is difficult to recognize individuals because they all look the same. Well if you think this then you are wrong. In most fish they are unique in their markings.

Let me give you some ways I distinguish my fish:

My Seven Tiger Barbs

Tiger Barbs are a schooling fish and prefer the company of each other, usually in groups of seven or more. They are a very colorful fish, orange or gold in color with four black strips across the body. Hence the name Tiger Barb.

The way you can distinguish them from one another is to look at the black stripes. Some of the stripes are thin, thick, blurred and some are of varying lengths.

So with seven to name I had to write down the stripe identification and the name I gave the fish. If I did not do this I would never remember them. But after awhile I was able to remember them without using the cheat sheet.

My Three Blue Three Dot Gourami

These are lovely fish that are actually a cobalt blue with two black dots on their side. With only two black dots why are they called Three Dot Gourami? The eye is counted as the third dot.

Like the Tiger Barb, the markings on the Three Dot Gourami are different. The dots are all different. Some of them are light black, some dark black, some oval and some round.

So like the Tiger Barbs, I identified the differences in the markings and named each individual ones. Of course I had to write the names down with the marking differences.

My Three African Feathrfin Squeakers

These were a little more difficult to identify as individuals. One reason is I hardly ever see them and they basically look the same. But I did identify one way to distinguish them as individuals, their coloring.

Some of them are dark in color while others are lighter in color. Using this method I was able to distinguish each individual African Featherfin Squeaker.

Conclusion

If you look closely you can identify individual fishes in your aquarium. By identifying the different markings you will be able to identify individual fish and even name them.
