Aquariums - What Type of Tank To Select

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

Introduction

As you set up your aquarium, you need to decide what type of tank you want. There are two types of tanks you can have, a community tank or a species tank.

Determine What Type Tank You Want

Basic question but it should be the first question you ask as you set up your tank. There are two types of tanks you can select from:

Community Tank - This is the type of tank I have and the type you will probably select also. It consists of several different species of fish that occupy different levels of your aquarium. For example, my 75-gallon aquarium has the following fish:

1. Three Kissing Gourami - These rise to the top to get a breath of air so they spend a lot of time at the top of the tank.

2. Three Blue or Three-Spot Gourami - Just like the Kissing Gourami, they spend a lot of time at the top also.

3. Seven Tiger Barb - These are schooling fish that spend most of their time in the center of the aquarium.

4. Two Plecostomus - Bottom feeders they spend the majority of their time at the bottom.

5. Three African Featherfin Catfish - These spend a lot of time hiding but when they come out to eat they are bottom feeders.

With the exception of the bottom feeders, the rest will feed on the surface of the water.

Species Tank - The second type of tank you can create is a species tank. You have probably seen these in restaurants or your dentist office, but breeders mainly use them. They contain only one species of fish.

Pros And Cons

Each different type of tank will have their own pros and cons. For example, the species tank is easier to maintain since there is only one species and they all need the same environment and eat the same food.

But a species tank is not very exciting since it consists of only one species of fish.

The community tank on the other hand is very pleasing to the eye with all the different types of fish in the tank.

A community tank is harder to maintain since the different fish species eat different types of food. For example, my surface feeders eat fish flakes and my bottom feeders eat algae tablets I give them. Plus the environment needs to be controlled closer.

Conclusion

If you are new to aquariums you may want to start off with a species tank and after you have some experience turn it into a community tank.
