Aquariums - How To Select Fish For Your Aquarium

April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 161

Introduction

Once you have your aquarium established and you are ready to put fish in your tank, you need to select them carefully. You do not want to put sick fish or fish that are incompatible with each other in the same aquarium tank.

By selecting your aquarium fish wisely, you will have a higher success rate at maintaining a healthy aquarium.

Here is what you need to consider when selecting your freshwater fish:

Species - If you are like me, you will want to put the most colorful ones in your tank. But if you do some research you will find that some of them are not compatible with each other. Fish are classified into three groups and cannot live together peacefully. So do not mix these groups together or you will have trouble. The three groups are:

  • Community
  • Semi-Aggressive
  • Aggressive

Also look how many of each species you need. For example, some fish require others of their same kind to live successfully. My Tiger Barbs require at least seven Tiger Barbs to be in the same tank. Less than six of these will cause them to become aggressive.

Size Matters - Do not over-crowd your tank with to many fish. As a rule of thumb, one inch of grown fish per one gallon of water. When you look at how big your fish will grow, do not include the tail in the measurement.

Fish Selection - When selecting your fish look at them to ensure they are healthy. Do not select fish that swim oddly for this is an indication that the fish is not well.

Plus stay away from fish that have torn fins or any other type of injury. Fish with any type of injuries will develop sickness that could affect your entire tank.

Pet Store Knowledge - Do not obtain them from just any pet store. If possible go to a store that specializes in selling fish. You can be assured that these stores know how to keep the fish they sell healthy and can answer any question you have on keeping fish.

But if you do not live close to a store that specializes in selling fish, there are chain pet stores that train their associates in being knowledgeable in freshwater fish. So do not rule these stores out. Ask questions of the employee to determine their level of knowledge in keeping aquarium fish.

Experience Level - If this is your first aquarium, you should elect to have fish that are easy to care for. For example, the first time I selected I chose semi-aggressive fish that could tolerate a wide range of water conditions.

Conclusion

When setting up your aquarium do your research in selecting your fish and you can prevent future troubles with your aquarium.
