Aquariums - Different Types Of Fish For Your Aquarium

February 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Introduction

Putting fish in your aquarium is more than going to a pet store and picking fish because you like them. Fish have certain classifications based on their personality and if you mix personalities, they will not get along and could kill each other.

Fish Classifications

When you start researching for establishing your aquarium, you may notice that fish are classified according to their personalities. So when you get ready to stock your aquarium, you need to select the personality you want for your aquarium. The worst thing you can do is mix personality types and then have one or more start to bully the other fish by chasing them and nipping them. This will cause the fish being bullied to become stressed and eventually die.

So consider the personality you want and then stock your aquarium with these personalities.

The different types of personalities you should consider are:

Community Fish - These are fish that get along well with each other. They are not known as nippers of other fish and are generally peaceful. These fish are generally easy to keep and eat the same types of food. Semi-Aggressive Fish - These fish can get along with each other but as they grow they tend to be nippers. These are the fish I have in my aquarium. I tried to get them the same size so that they will grow together and one would not be larger than the others. Aggressive Fish - These are fish that should not be mixed with other fish, but only with fish of the same species and size.

When I elected to have my aquarium stocked it with semi-aggressive, I did a lot of research in books and on the Internet. I made my selection and then went to the pet store to start stocking my aquarium.

I found that the information I had researched was wrong and some of the fish I wanted were classified as Community Fish or Aggressive Fish. So I had to start over and use the pet stores classification of the fish they had in stock.

I ended up with the following semi-aggressive fish that occupy different levels of the aquarium, which helps in allowing them to get along:

3 Kissing Gourami (occupies top of tank) 3 Blue Gourami (occupies top of tank) 7 Tiger Barbs (occupies middle of tank) 2 Plecostomus (occupies bottom of tank) 3 African Featherfin Catfish (occupies bottom of tank)

I have had these fish for several years and they get along with each other famously.

J.W. Chase has been keeping a 75-gallon aquarium with several different fish species for many years. He has extensive knowledge of how to manage an aquarium keeping all his fish healthy and smiling. His web site has information on keeping aquariums and your fish happy. If you want more information on how to manage an aquarium go to his site http://www.squidoo.com/homefreshwateraquariums.
