Sailing Cruise - What Is It?

August 05, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 167

What is a Sailing Cruise?

A sailing cruise is essentially a voyage from place to place aboard a wind driven boat, as opposed to an engine driven vessel. The term "cruise", tends to be applied where guests are passengers on the voyage rather than participating in sailing the boat.

Boats offering sailing cruises tend to be quite long, more than 100ft (30m), and capable of carrying a number of passengers, each of whom pays an individual price for a bunk / berth, or a cabin.

How is it different from a Sailing Holiday?

On a sailing holiday guests want to, and pay to be involved in activities to sail the boat from one location to the next. Typically, this type of holiday is a more active proposition.

How is a Sailing Cruise different from a Sailing Boat Charter?

Guests can book an individual place (berth or cabin) on a sailing cruise; a sailboat charter is a booking for the whole boat and is generally made by a group, family or business for a private voyage.

What Types of Sailing Cruise Are There?

Trips may be booked for a day, a weekend, or for a week or more depending on the cruise boat's itinerary and the cruising area. Some boats operate out of a fixed harbour and run day to day cruises such as a harbour or coastal tour, and a sunset cruise; others are more nomadic and guests can join at one port and leave at another.

Where Do Sailing Cruises Operate?

Wind powered ships operate all over the world and include many of the tall ships and Windjammers preserved from the days when maritime trade was the mainstay of global commerce. Typically you can take a sailing cruise in the Mediterranean, Caribbean or Baltic Sea, and boats also operate out of US harbours and elsewhere throughout the world.

Examples include:

Participatory Sailing Trips

It's also possible to book a more active cruise where guests can get involved with pulling the ropes and sailing the boat, more correctly known as a sailing holiday. Such participatory cruises on the larger sailing ships tend to be run by charities and offer a more informal arrangement on board including dormitory style bunks and communal meals.

Small Boat Sailing Holidays

Cruises on smaller boats offer a more personal and intimate environment, but you are expected to pitch in and get involved with all aspects of the trip including sailing the boat, provisioning and cooking. They are more correctly termed sailing holidays.
