A Competitive Scholarship: Truman Scholarship

March 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 166

Harry S Truman became the 34th President of the United States after Franklin D. Roosevelt died a short time into his 4th term in office. Truman's administration dealt with some difficult times in the US. There were still a lot of wartime shortages, and there were a lot of military personnel were coming home and trying to integrate into society. As part of his legacy, the Harry S Truman Scholarship was started shortly after his death. Those who are trying to get this scholarship need to have some Scholarship Tips.

The Truman Scholarship is very competitive. Of all the hundreds of applicants who complete the Truman Scholarship Registration process only 50-75 people actually get the scholarship. The people who are eligible for this program are college juniors who are working on public service degrees and who have demonstrated their leadership abilities. The reason that it is offered to juniors in college is because they want to give the most dedicated students this award.

Some of the Scholarship Tips include checking out your record in college. Since this award is for those students who have shown leadership and is designed to help nurture leadership qualities, you sure that you have modeled those qualities. What help is if you have participated in activities that are involved in public service. Examples include being involved in political groups associated in your school, advocacy groups and participation in community service. You will also need to make sure that you have a strong academic record.

To get the Truman Scholarship Application, the applicant should have actively participated in student organization or campus based extracurricular activities, or might have been involved in a community service activity not organized by their school. They may have taken on government internships or commissions, or become active in interest groups or campaigns or political activities.

If you are one of the people who get awarded the Truman Scholarship, be aware that you need to spend at least 3 out of 7 post-graduate years working in the public sector. If you don't then you might be asked to pay back the money you were given. Follow a few simple Scholarship Tips and you can be one of the lucky people who will get one, and go on to finish your college career and help give back. Instead of statues or monuments to Truman, this is the way that he is remembered, and it is a good fit for him and his goals in life.
