The Importance Of Fathers

June 07, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 148

Each parent contributes to the raising of children who want to please their parents. For most couples and generally speaking, the mother is primarily the loving and nurturing parent, the parent who encourages and emotionally supports the young child, the primary protector of the growing child who encourages the child to learn social skills and solve problems.Yes, fathers can have the same roles, but they do not necessarily do so consistently in the child's life. They will function as the "secondary" or background parent, often with an "enforcement" role for behavior or presenter of logical consequences (and logical reasoning).

Researchers have shown that the early adolescence period.Unfortunately, this time period often coincides with many parental divorces. This early adolescence period is critical. It is when "neediness" is replaced by "independence-seeking".Fathers come into primary importance about the time a child enters puberty and hormonal reactions to the mother's nurturance cause challenges and conflicts for independence. This is when children want to be more independent and freed of the nurturer's perceived suffocating restrictions (constantly telling a child what to do, when to do it, how to do it but never explaining why to do it).It is also a period of having/needing strong male figures in a child's life for social role models.Fathers provide more structure with consistent consequences in social settings; they are the authority that adolescents must learn to deal with.

When a father governs by physical strength and power, sooner or later a male child will challenge him or defy him (call it dominance as in animals but it is really a surge of breaking loose from rules to be obeyed for little perceived reasons).A female child will usually engage in early sexual activity as an act of rebellion. When a father governs by reason and enforcement of logical consequences (assuming children are allowed problem solving and decision making capabilities in their lives), children of either gender have less reason to rebel and assert themselves.

Mothers, especially those who are single parents, can easily change the need for a male's approach to parenting an adolescent by becoming more "male-like" in managing the adolescent and his/her behaviors.Giving an adolescent options, helping him or her work through difficult decision and/or complex problems empowers the adolescent so he/she will not have to rebel against directive behavior management.Unfortunately in the culture of the United States parents and authority figures do not encourage and nurture a child's ability to make choices, use discernment in decision making processes, and delay gratification in the problem solving process.More information on how parents can help with these skills is available on the website for Parents Teach Kids.

All children can succeed in school. Parents can help their children by teaching the foundational skills that schools presume children have. Without the foundation for schools' academic instruction, children needlessly struggle and/or fail. Their future becomes affected because they then believe they are less than others, not able to succeed or achieve or provide for themselves or their families.
