Is Texting Replacing Talking?

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 110

Have you ever gotten up in the morning and for some reason thought that you were forgetting something? You know, you wondered if it was someone's birthday, or if you had an appointment. Or maybe you needed to call and old friend. Whatever it is, you just felt as though you were forgetting to do something. Well that is how I felt this morning. I couldn't place my finger on what it was that just kept nagging me. I checked my calendar and my appointment schedule and there was nothing I was forgetting, so I just went on with my morning. Then out of the blue, I get a text.

The text read, 'Thinking of you daddy, we love you!" It was from my two daughters in college. I have four children in all, two boys and two girls. The three oldest are off in college, so I mostly write about my youngest child who lives with me. Nevertheless, getting that text this morning validated the feeling that listening to your heart always has purpose. I knew that my body was telling me something, and sure enough, it was that my girls were reaching out.

My two girls, Serina and Paulina are 21 and 19 and both attend the same university. They are extremely close and have a real zest for life. They also know that they are special, simply because they broke the male dominance of the Lewis family. And for that, Mom was more than happy to have company. My parents had four boys, ensuring that the Lewis name would carry on for years to come, and then the first three grandchildren were boys. At this point we had all about given up. Then came Serina, named appropriately for her quiet and peaceful personality and then Paulina who from the time she was born had her eyes set on changing the world.

This morning after I received the text it brought back so many memories. Like the time a couple of years back when they made me a Happy Fathers Day cake, or the time they hand made a get well card followed by how proud they were of me for finishing my rehab program and turning my life around. There have been so many times where I stop and wonder what I did to deserve this unconditional love. It is a text like this morning's that puts life in complete perspective. This is how I see it.

I am a perfect man through the eyes of God. However, I have been shaken, scarred, bruised, and hurt from this daily grind called life. Looking back now, I see what the Lord was preparing me for. Simply put, without these scars to remind me where I once was, I would not be able to share my story. My story is simple, never stop loving yourself. If you have children, never give up on them. I learned that my past is not as important as my today and that my truth, when spoken has the ability to save a life or turn one around. I am so proud of my daughters and the women they are becoming. It always brings me back to a day several years ago when we were all going out to dinner and I went around to open the doors of the car for my girls. After we got going they asked, "why did you do that?" I simply said to them, I am teaching you what was taught to me by my father, always respect women. They both smiled as if to say that they now had something to watch out for as they ventured out on their own dates.

Watching the two of them grow is a joy that cannot be put into words. I am so proud of all my children and feel so blessed to be alive to watch their lives unfold. The next time you get that feeling that you are forgetting something, just stop and look at your kids or parents or spouse and tell them that you love them. I am sure that will fill that hole in your soul. The choice is within.
