Fatherhood: An Unscripted Journey

December 18, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 132

Being a father to two wonderful children is equivalent to winning the lottery or being a sports superstar. They both have their obvious advantages and their not-so-obvious disadvantages. Fatherhood is simply trial by fire. There is no handbook that we are given when our bundles of joy arrive. Ask any veteran parent and the usual response would look something like "you will learn". At the time, you shrug your shoulders, say thank you and worry about the challenges ahead when they arrive. Then one day it hits you, you have no idea what you are doing!

So your child is crying. Are they hungry? Do they need a nap? Do they have a cold? Did they eat something they shouldn't have? Did they fall? First of all, relax. Nobody speaks baby, so it is a guessing game from the get go. It will get easier with time. Children tend to display slightly different behavior based on their needs and these small deviations may only be noticed by those around them the most, mommy and daddy. The key here is to pay attention. Listen to your child, watch their movements and their facial expressions. Learn who your child is. This goes a long way and you will continue to learn as they get older.

What you learn and how you use that information are two entirely different things. As long as you do what you feel is best for them, that's all that can be asked of you. Expect to hit the occasional bump in the road along the way. You are going to lose your temper, raise your voice and possibly say things that make you think "I shouldn't have said/done that". Make sure that your children know why you are happy or upset and always explain the situation to them. Trust me, they are much smarter than we give them credit for.

Our children are sponges. The things my daughter remembers and says baffle me everyday. Please, if you remember nothing else from this, talk to your children like children, not babies. Talk using full sentences, ask them questions and avoid, at all costs, the baby talk. This does nothing to foster their development, they will learn from listening to you.

Parenting is wonderful and fulfilling experience. Keep cool, do what you think is best and remember, you will never, EVER, be right! Good luck and happy fatherhood.
