Red Lake Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth: Is This Really Safe for Animals to Consume?

Diatomaceous earth is composed of the fossilized remains of tiny organisms known as diatoms. The edges of these fossilized diatoms are extremely sharp and will lacerate the exoskeleton of nearly any crawling insect that comes in contact with them. Once their outer shell has been lacerated, the powdery product dehydrates the insect, killing it, although not instantaneously. While diatomaceous earth works well to kill most crawling insects, there are a few species that it is known to be especially effective against including ants, spiders, crickets, roaches, fleas, centipedes, millipedes, silverfish, earwigs, Boxelder bugs, slugs, bed bugs, flies, darkling beetles and flour beetles.

As a safe and natural alternative to chemical pesticides, food grade diatomaceous earth is also often used as a natural insecticide. As well, many products, including Red Lake Earth, are also suitable for use in animal feed (at a rate of two percent of their daily intake of feed).

But, how can this natural product be safe for animals to consume when it is so deadly to insects?

The particles in diatomaceous earth are very tiny and their razor-sharp edges only function to lacerate surfaces at a microscopic level. Because insects are also small, their exoskeletons can easily be cut. The movement of the insects' bodies across the particles, as well as their waxy exoskeletons, creates conditions in which the diatomaceous earth rubs against their bodies and lacerates their outer shells. Many parasites are also vulnerable, due to their soft bodies that are easily cut. A large, strong surface however, such as the tissue of the intestines and stomach, are not affected by the sharp edges, as the particles are too tiny to cause any damage.

So, while food grade diatomaceous earth has the ability to kill insects due to the razor-sharp edges of its particles, it is completely safe for animals to consume. In fact, Red Lake Earth is OMRI listed (Organic Materials Review Institute) for use in organic production and is safe to use with all animals (except reptiles, as it may dry out their skin). As well, no residue from the product has been found in animals (or their offspring or milk) that have consumed it.

A study was conducted to test for any absorption of diatomaceous earth into milk produced by cows. The cows were fed the product at a rate of two percent. The results of this study found no absorption or residue of the product in the milk. Red Lake Earth can also be fed to layers, as well as animals produced for meat, without any residue transferring to the resulting products.
