FDA To Limit the Amount Of Antibiotics In Animal Feed

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 254

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) have revealed their new finalized plan to ask drug companies to voluntarily limit the use of antibiotics within animal feed. This has been attempted before in 1977 but after recent scientific investigation it has been proven that these foods are causing animals and humans serious harm.

A majority of farmers are prone to use antibiotic induced animal feed in order to enhance growth of their poultry and other livestock. As a result of the food that the livestock is consuming, we humans who are eating the animals have thus been prone to disease and a new outrage of a 'superbug'.

It is a well-known fact that over-consummation of penicillin or any other drugs prescribed by the doctors could result in us becoming immune. This new plan attempts to address the controversial debate about the health hazard of such animal feed.

With this whole revolution in progress, the FDA have given animal feed manufacturers 3 months to set up a plan of reduction and given those three years to enforce it. The outcomes of this whole new system are expected to be as follows:

  • Farmers will no longer be able to purchase over-the-counter drugs to enhance performance and growth of their livestock. Instead, they will only be able to use these when specifically prescribed by a qualified veterinarian.
  • Diminish most of the potentially harmful antibiotics from the animal feed in order to provide livestock with a healthier way of living and reduce the risk for humans.
  • Improve the overall quality of animal feed in general and increase the awareness of the risk of using antibiotics for both human and animals within their feed.

As the law on this whole matter is scheduled to be completely changed within three years, we know that it will provide us and animals with a healthier way of living and eating. Many people who are ignorantly purchasing meat off the shelves are unaware of their potential risk - hence the need to raise the awareness on this matter.

If you are a farmer yourself and support this change then there are natural and healthy alternatives to investing in mass-produced and unsatisfactory animal feed. The Animal Health Institute has claimed that they wholeheartedly support this change but believe that there are details that must be addressed to make this work efficiently.

Many people who have become aware of this matter due to its high visibility within the media also have expressed their full support and believe we should aim towards a natural and healthy future in animal feed.
