Euro 2012 Fantasy Football Points Scoring

May 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

Euro 2012 Fantasy Football is on its way and I'm here to try and give you the best start I can. I've based this article on the free version available through McDonalds and UEFA but further articles may come on line as different versions appear.

The purpose of this article is to look at the way the games points are awarded and use this as the basis for our player selection. So where do we start?

It's the taking part that counts

In line with the Premier League version of fantasy football but at odds with the Yahoo version, the McDonalds 2012 game gives you credit for just turning up. The rules clearly state that any player who graces the pitch receives one point and those that last over 60 minutes will get two. This is a fantastic start to any team as you can be assured, if you choose well, 22 points for your team just by choosing players who are actually going to play. This is by far the most important aspect of the game, you should always aim to have achieved 66 points by the end of Matchday 3 by having all possible positions playing.

Where do goals come from?

The McDonalds game adjusts the points awarded for a goal by one point for every position back from the forwards. In other words, a forward scores 4, a midfielder 5, a defender or a goalkeeper scores 6. Whilst goals from between the sticks are extremely rare, there are plenty of defenders and midfielders who can score goals - players like Raphael Van de Vaart, Ashley Young, Raul Meireles, Cabaye, Olsson, Evra, Cahill etc. These should be at the front of your thinking. It is also worth looking for players who are most likely to create assists, these are undoubtedly wingers and wingbacks so players like Mata can feature here.

Park the bus.

One of the universally appreciated skills in fantasy football is the ability to keep a clean sheet. In the McDonalds 2012 game it is really appreciated! If you choose a team with the formation of 1-5-4-1 you could actually attract a score of 28 points if your non-forwards all keep a clean sheet. From experience, its easy to suggest this but far harder to be successful, to my mind, selecting defenders who play in front of a world class keeper will steer you right.

Whilst there is a raft of scoring options for penalties, these scores are extremely difficult to predict in advance. Penalties are few and far between and it's extremely hard to ascertain who will commit the foul or the goalkeepers' chance of success of saving the attempt. Whilst you could look at the referee's previous performance of dishing out red cards, I would personally remove this whole section from your thinking. It sometimes just makes sense concentrating on what you can control.

The rest

The remaining points revolve around disciplinary actions and on field actions such as saves. Whilst it is possible to predict which players are likely to attract red and yellow cards by their domestic appearances, this should be taken with a pinch of salt as there's always a difference when wearing your national shirt. The goalkeeping scoring of 1 point for every 3 saves is laughable. If it had been higher, it might have been worth using a goalkeeper who would be forced to act more regularly but these scores just lead you to choose the most cast iron solution that you can.
