Why Your Eyesight Gets Bad With Age

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 113

It is common knowledge that, as we grow older, our eyesight starts to diminish. This is because older people usually say that they are not able to see either up close or far away, and most often, they use eyeglasses in order to read a book. What explains that? Why is it that our eyesight gets bad with age? Read on and you may be able to understand, better why this occurs.

In order for you to understand why vision loss occurs as we age, you must know the basic structure of the eye. As we all know, the eye is like a video camera. When we look at a certain object, there is light that enters the eye. This light would have to travel through 4 main structures. When the light signal is distorted or degraded, it can result in a poor vision. Let us take a look at these 4 main structures and understand how the light affects each structure.

Cornea - This is the entry point for the light. It is the transparent tissue that can be seen on the front of the eyes and it functions as the window.

Lens - After the light enters the eye, it will then encounter the lens, the lens then focuses the light thinly on the retina.

Retina - This is comparable to the film of a camera. In the Retina, the light will be changed into a neural signal and then the brain will interpret it to form an image.

Optic nerve - This will carry the light signals to the brain which then works just like a cable connecting data to a video camera, then to a computer.

When there is a problem on any of these structures, there is a big chance that there will be a vision problem. Additionally, here are some conditions that may have an effect on the eyesight of a person once, he or she gets older.

Blepharitis - This is condition is where the eyelids will become inflamed. This can damage the smooth surface of the cornea, the Cornea, is very important in producing a clear image. When the eyelid becomes severely inflamed, there is a chance that ducts, producing the tears will be damaged and this can affect the tears which coat the cornea. When this happens, a person will experience blurred vision, which can usually be relieved by blinking the eyes.

Presbyopia and cataracts - These are conditions which can affect the lens as a person ages. Cataracts, is the clouding of the lens and it affects the vision by forcing the image to pass via a distorted medium, which eventually results in diminished vision. Similarly, if the lens is no longer pliable, it will not be able to focus on a wide range of distances. Rather, it will become fixed on objects that are closer and it will not be able to focus on objects in the distance.
