Obesity May Correlate to Future Vision Problems

February 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 187

For years and years, studies have continuously confirmed that the American population is growing more obese. The cause and effect of obesity goes far beyond, the expansion of a waistline on Americans. This obesity is linked to diabetes and in turn linked to diabetic eye diseases, including glaucoma. Researchers recorded by, The National Journal described the severity of the obesity levels simply by stating, "by 2020, more than 80 percent of US men and more than 70 percent of women will be overweight or obese, and more than half will either have full-blown diabetes or be well on the way to developing it." These numbers are staggering and should bring attention to people for their overall health, including vision.

Though, most people understand that obesity has an affect on their health, the effect on their vision is something that is often overlooked. Unfortunately, poor health is a direct cause of poor vision. The most important aspect is awareness that the correlation between obesity and vision problems is a prominent factor along with other aspects, such as family health history, age, and sometimes race.

Researchers found that based on a national health and nutrition survey, teens are unaware of potential problems of a poor diet. The New England Journal of Medicine, believes if awareness starts young then obese children can lose weight before adulthood and minimize their chances for the disease-risks of adulthood obesity. These risks include, diabetes, high blood pressure, clogged arteries, etc. Unfortunately without awareness of the issue, 65 percent of overweight children will become obese adults, according to Health Day journal.

To become healthier all around, is a direct correlation to vision health because other health issues create vision problems. For instance, those you are diagnosed with diabetes have a higher risk for glaucoma, which can steal your eyesight slowly. Although glaucoma can be treated it does not have a cure yet.

Also, foods high in saturated fats will clog arteries, which are the same arteries providing blood and nutrients to your eyes. Over time the slowly blood to your eyes, can cause your eyes to produce free radicals in the eyes and eventually affect your sight.

Eating for your health is important at any age. Obesity affects more than just adults and by the new research, it is clear that the children need awareness to know that it carries major health problems, which could result in eye related issues including blindness.

Share information with children on healthy eating and also eye health related foods, which are good for heart health as well.
