It is important to always maintain a healthy nutritious diet for all facets of our lives. One aspect we sometimes forget about when it comes to healthy living is the active care for our eyes, however. We typically think long and hard about our physical shape, sun exposure, or language etiquette - unfortunately our eyesight goes dismissed. In the 1990s, it was realized that vision is a key component to our daily needs that is certainly going without the necessary precautions; therefore the National Eye Institute (NEI) launched a partially government-run study called AREDS (the Age-Related Eye Disease Study). This study was meant to do two main things: determine the main threats of the onset of of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and evaluate certain nutrients and their effects on the advancement of AMD. Luckily, this study helped experts understand that there are great vitamins available that can be extremely beneficial for our entire bodies - particularly our eyes, and classify which they were! When it comes to proper vision care, there are certain vitamins that you should be sure you get your daily-needed amount of! Vitamin A and beta-carotene, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin, phytochemical antioxidants, omega-3 essential fatty acids, and bioflavonoids are all the main vitamins that your supplements should have inside.

Vitamin A and beta-carotene (which is essentially the forerunner for the vitamin A) are great for our bodies in general. While helpful to the proper operation of our immune systems and assisting in the healing of certain injuries, beta-carotene and vitamin A are crucial for the capability of scotopic vision. Vitamin B complex - which includes just about all of the vitamin B's: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 folic acid, as well as biotin and choline - assists in decreasing chronic inflammation. It maintains blood levels, which can help for certain vascular problems that would negatively affect the optical nerves. Among other things, vitamin B also helps prevent against AMD. Vitamin C is a wonderful antioxidant that was actually one of the original findings in the AREDS, along with vitamin E. Vitamin D is known to help lower the risk of obtaining macular degeneration, while the carotenoids and macular pigments, lutein and zeaxanthin, do as well.

Phytochemical antioxidants are found in plant extracts, while bioflavonoids appear in fruits and vegetables. While they both assist the entire body, they also both help protect our eyes. Lastly, omega-3 essential fatty acids are essential for those constantly experiencing dry eyes.

Now that you are aware of the specific supplements you should be taking in in order to maintain healthy eyes, it is also imperative that you give them the best possible medical attention as well. Always keep your eyeglasses prescription up-to-date and current. If there is anything strange about your current pair of glasses, it may be that your prescription is off - or that you need a higher prescription, possibly multifocal glasses instead of single-vision. So, be sure to start properly caring for your eyes; they help you see the world, after all!
