Astigmatism And Laser Eye Surgery

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 176

Astigmatism is a condition in which the eye is unable to properly focus light on the retina. The reason for this is an irregular shaped cornea that distorts the light entering the eye. As a result, to the person affected, objects appear blurred or out of focus. The amount of blurriness can be severe or light depending on how distorted the cornea is. In some people, this distorted vision can cause headaches or eyestrain.

Both eyes are not necessarily affected. You could have astigmatism in one eye, and perfect 20/20 vision in the other. In addition, having astigmatism does not rule out the presence of other eye problems. Many people with this condition also will be nearsighted or farsighted. The majority of people with visual distortion problems inherit it from their parents. But, it can be caused by injury or disease as well.

In the past, astigmatism was typically treated by prescribing eye glasses or contacts. However, with the popularity of laser eye surgery over the last 20 years, many people with astigmatism have had the desire to throw away their glasses and undergo refractive surgery to have their vision corrected.

Laser surgery has long been available to those who are nearsighted or farsighted as the procedure to correct those vision defects is much simpler. However, the complexity of reshaping eyes with astigmatism was far too challenging in the early days of laser eye surgery. As a result, those with astigmatism were not able take advantage of this type of cure.

But, the integration of the computer with laser technology has made it much easier to perform the needed surgery with the precise amount of correction necessary. In fact, today, astigmatism is one of the more common types of vision problems for which laser refractive surgery is performed. Refractive surgery may still be unable to correct the more difficult cases of astigmatism. But, for mild to medium cases, the technology has improved so much that correction is not a problem.

As is true when considering any type of surgery, you should first seek to find a competent laser eye surgeon who can evaluate whether you are a good candidate for astigmatism correction. If you live in a community with a professional sports team, a great shortcut to finding a reliable laser surgeon is to find which eye care offices provide the eye care for their athletes. These teams have lots of money invested in their players, so it's a good bet that they have done their research before sending one of their players to a surgeon to have their vision corrected.
