All About Conjunctivitis

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 208

We have all heard of conjunctivitis before, but what does it really mean? Typically we tend to have a general understanding of what conjunctivitis is, but most of us don't know exactly what it entails - especially regarding the several different kinds. Conjunctivitis gets its name from an inflammation in the conjunctiva: or a swelling in the extrinsic layer of the eye and lining of the eyelids; this usually causes the eye to become extremely pink, or even bloodshot and red. Due to this swollen pink coloring, conjunctivitis is more commonly - and often appropriately - known as pink eye.

There are several reasons our eyes can become puffy and we can get pink eye; however it generally comes from some sort of strange external object making its way into our optical path. These foreign bodies could be an extra amount of bacteria or fungi, or even be due to allergies or a virus outside of the ocular region. Along with the causes of conjunctivitis being vast, there are also several different kinds of pink eye that you can catch: neonatal, viral, irritant, allergic, and bacterial.

While neonatal conjunctivitis rarely affects newborn babies, when it does, it is a very serious problem. It can be brought on to the baby by a mother passing on an STD infection; and causes much of the typical symptoms that pink eye brings, like: pink and red bloodiness, inflammation, and pus. Viral conjunctivitis is really just a symptom of a basic common cold. While pink eye is generally very contagious, viral conjunctivitis usually affects only one eye; so ensuring that it doesn't get passed along to the other, and annoying discharge are the biggest obstacles that comes with it. Irritant conjunctivitis is specific to the vast amounts of foreign bodies that could come in and contaminate our eyes, like toxic chemicals, or other external objects.

This type can range from a mild case of pink eye to a very serious matter than would seek medical attention right away - mostly all depending on what invaded the eye. Allergies to dust, pollens, certain smells or cosmetics can also cause pink eye; this is referred to as allergic conjunctivitis. Usually this type is a less serious in regards to the symptoms. Both eyes tend to become pink and a bit puffy, with some excess water secretion. While the symptoms can get much worse if it's not treated, pus and added discharge are not usually a problem. Bacterial conjunctivitis is extremely contagious - even more so than the rest. Along with the typical inflammation, color change, and irritation of the pink eye, bacterial conjunctivitis can also bring a thick off-white colored discharge that hardens and sticks your eyes together, as well as possible blurred vision. If any of the above types of pink eye happen to you and they do not go away within about three to four days, if you haven't already done so, be sure to consult a doctor at your earliest convenience!

Eye glasses are a great solution when dealing with the sorrows of any type of conjunctivitis because they can help you see without touching your infected eyes. For instance, you certainly don't want to continue wearing your daily contacts if you have any kind of inflammation in your eyes! Not only will be completely uncomfortable, but you will continue to spread the virus back into your eyes continuously. So, even if you generally prefer contacts over prescription glasses, it is probably best for you to always have a spare pair lying around should a situation like this occur: be sure to buy glasses and stop your pink eye from spreading!
