What You Need to Know About White Water Rafting

February 21, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 142

White water rafting is a type of extreme sport that is getting more and more common all around the world. To take part in this sport you need a raft and colleagues with whom you will paddle the boat. Rafting is not a very complicated sport but the risk involved in it can reach scary heights. This is why it is important to have a professional rafting expert on board the raft before going out to the water. They become especially important when the raft has to go around or over obstacles in the water because they will know the route better than anyone else and they will also know what technique to use to get over the obstacles.

While white water rafting is very thrilling and exciting to take part in, it is very important to realise that it is not child's play and lives have been lost because of negligence. Rafting has grades of difficulty ranging from the simplest to the level which can cause fatalities. In all they are six main grades and the first is Grade 1, this does not require much expertise and anyone with the bare minimum in rafting knowledge can handle it. The route may be characterised by a few rough patches.

Grade 2 is the next one characterised by a route bearing rough water and some rocks. The rafter may need to manoeuvre around the obstacles and therefore must possess basic paddling skills.

The third is of course grade 3 which usually has some waves, white water, a slight drop and some rocks. Quite a bit of manoeuvring maybe required here especially for the drop.

There is not much difference between Grade three and the next Grade 4 except for the fact that grade 4 has medium (not small) waves and the drop here maybe more than that in grade 3. The guide should be able to negotiate sharp manoeuvres to keep from hitting the raft against rocks and other obstacles in the water. Experience paddling in white water is a requirement for this grade.

Grade 5 is more complex. It describes a difficult route that has a large volume of water, white water, large waves, big rocks and if present, quite a high dropping height.

The last and most difficult and risky stage of white water rafting is grade 6. A lot of expertise is required for this kind of route. Rapids here are so dangerous that they cannot be plied regularly. All the risks and hazards experienced in the other grades are magnified 6 fold here. The drops here are considered death traps and if ever anyone gets through a grade 6, it is only by sheer luck and nothing else. They are not safe routes to take and equipment is highly likely to give in such situations.
