How to Successfully Break Into the Sport of Kiting by Understanding the Lines on a Kite

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

Who says flying kites is only for children? Perhaps it was in the past, but it's certainly not anymore! With the growing popularity of stunt kites the world of kiting is becoming more than just a fun past-time, it is a sport!

Stunt kites have an advantage over traditional single line kites, because they have an additional line. This duel line set-up allows the flyer to control the kite. The flyer pulls and eases of the lines to move the kite around in the air. A person can direct the kite to perform sharp turns, dives, and tricks. With a mixture of skill and creativity, the kite becomes a tool in the air--looping, diving, swirling, and twirling! It is thrilling.

If you are interested in getting into the sport, the first thing you will need is a trainer kite. Trainer kites function like the larger, more powerful stunt kites, but they are constructed on a smaller scale allowing for increased safety, versatility, and room for error. There are countless sites on the Internet that sell trainers. They will typically cost between one hundred and three hundred dollars. Look for one made of high performance fabric like rip-stop nylon with frames of carbon or glass fiber. High-quality construction gives the kite the strength needed to fly in high winds. The size will depend on your weight and the type of winds you intend to fly in. Pay close attention to this as you are purchasing your kite, for it does affect the way you will fly. Like any other sport, the more time you spend flying, the better you will be at controlling your kite.

Once you are ready to upgrade do a more powerful kite, you can find many options available. The popular advanced ones have three to four lines per kite. Each additional line adds control and versatility.

Three line kites allow the sail to be tilted from side to side to control turning, as do the basic two line kites. The third line allows the flyer to control the angle of attack, speed, and reverse motion.

Four line kites, commonly referred to as quad-line foils, include all of the benefits of two and three line kites with one significant addition: they allow the sail to be twisted, causing it to spin like a propeller. This spinning motion is fun to create and the momentum generates a lot of power. Quad line foils are far more popular than three line kites, so the selection is greater and the designs are better tested.

Quad line flying is much different than flying a two line kite. It might take a person some time to adjust to the new controls and the added features. But, the practice is worth it. There is nothing like flying a four line kite in the world! It is a thrilling experience.
