Owning a pet can be a very rewarding experience. Even though there is a certain amount of commitment involved, they can become loving companions. When people think of owning an animal, they seldom think of pot belly pigs as pets. Although they do have their own specific requirements, often pet lovers find them to be intelligent and affectionate.

There are a few things you need to look into before considering pot belly pigs as pets:

  1. The district you live in must permit ownership of this type of animal.
  2. There should be a vet available who knows how to treat pigs.
  3. You need a secure outside area large enough to accommodate your pig.
  4. A lot of commitment is needed to have pot belly pigs as pets.
  5. They can become aggressive if not properly trained.
  6. They quite often do not get along with dogs.
  7. They can grow to the size of a medium-sized dog.

Pot belly pigs as pets in the house

Keeping one of these pets in your house can cause big problems due to their size and curiosity. It is important to prepare your house for the arrival of your new addition. They are very intelligent creatures and will get into anything they can get their nose around. They can even learn to open fridge doors to look for food.

It best to place cleaning supplies, medicine, and any other toxic materials well out of reach. Some plants can be harmful to them, so you need to find out which ones are safe. Electric cords should be hidden away as much as possible.

Pot belly pigs as pets outdoors

To accommodate these pets outdoors, a large fenced yard is ideal. This will allow them enough freedom to roam around and will satisfy their inquisitive nature and allow them to get some exercise. There are certain nutrients in the soil that they need, so having access to the outdoors will satisfy this requirement.

Before you actually decide whether this pet will fit into your lifestyle, some in-depth research is necessary on what you can expect when caring for these animals. It quite often happens that after a while pet owners find that their pets are more than they can handle. But once they have decided this is the pet for them, the responsibility and care needed to own pot belly pigs as pets can be worth the effort and they can make a great addition to the family.
