Keeping Marmosets As Pets

April 04, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 833

Keeping marmosets as pets is becoming a trend. And it's no wonder - marmosets are one of the most adorable animals, not only cute and small but highly sociable. They love to play and hug people, but keeping a marmoset is not all roses. There are thorns too.

First of all, it can be extremely expensive. It is not that food or the items you need to buy are very expensive. In fact, marmosets, as pets go, are easy to feed and to build a house to. It is the electricity bill necessary to keep the room at the ideal temperature that is the problem. It will be much larger than if you kept several saltwater tanks running, famous for being expensive.

It is also considered inhumane by many people to keep a marmoset alone. In the wild they live in groups and lonely marmosets can display symptoms of depression, such as low activity levels or less feeding. Keeping at least three marmosets is the idea picture (fortunately it doesn't raise the electricity bill).

Another caveat is their house. Many people will tell you a simple large cage is enough, but it isn't. There must be a lot of climbing opportunities, places for them to swing and a place where the group can sit together and overlook everything. A simple ferret cage is simply not enough.

Finding a vet can also be complicated. Not all vets do exotic animals. And not all vets who do will look after primates. Before you decide to keep marmosets as pets make sure you find a vet who will look after the little critters.

Another thing to do before getting marmosets involves planning for numbers. If you have a male and a female they will reproduce. A lot. In fact, that is one of the reasons they are so popular with research facilities and why it is the UK and not Brazil, where they are native from, that exports the most marmosets in the world.

So before you get your new pets ask yourself what you will do with their offspring. Groups are usually made up of members from the same family but they only grow to have around 15 elements. After that fights will break and there have been cases of marmosets being killed by their family.

But even before reaching 15 elements some free spirits may want to leave and start behaving destructive toward the rest of the group.

So plan well before getting marmosets as pets. Read through a complete care guide for marmosets as pets before making your decision and make sure you won't be one of the owners who abandons or kills his marmoset due to lack of planning.
