Fennec Fox Care Sheet

February 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 415

The Fennec fox has become a popular exotic pet in the last few years. It's no wonder - they are small, cuddly, energetic, love to play and their large ears make them the cuttest of all foxes.

Fennecs have a beige coat that offers camouflage on the Sahara desert, where they are native from. Their paws are covered with fur that prevents burning in the hot sand. And their large ears dissipate heat and cool the foxes down.

Despite this, Fennec foxes do just as well in warm climates as they do in the cold, as long as you provide a warm "den" for them to rest.

Fennec foxes are nocturnal. This is an important fact because if you own a Fennec you must get used to the loud noises and activity at night. Few foxes will be completely quiet all throughout the night - most will jump, dig and even bark. This means neighbors may not be happy with your pet.

Another concern is restraining them. Fennecs are like escape artists. They dig remarkably deep and fast, they run, and they jump at least as high as a cat. When building a house for your new pet you should provide digging opportunities by burying the fence at least 10 feet deep.

Pre-made three story ferret cages are also a good house for Fennec foxes. It doesn't allow to dig, but you can compensate for that by letting them into the yard (with a leash) every once in a while.

The Fennec fox diet consists of insects, eggs, small rodents and birds. They will also eat vegetables, seeds and fruit. Their protein requirements are very high and simple dog food will make the ill over the long run. Cat food can be a good supplement, as it is rich in protein, but it still isn't enough.

If you want a Fennec you must find a source of insects or grow your own. You should give them a few dozen a day as well as some raw meat and vegetables. Fruit should be used as a treat (and cherries make their urine smell less).

A good supplement is taurine, an amino acid. About 500mg a day should keep your fox healthy and happy.

Fennec foxes require a lot of playtime, much more than dogs. They have bursts of energy when they run like crazy, jump, play, bark and are generally mischievous. Then they will suddenly collapse and snuggle on your lap.
