7 Ways to Find Exotic Animals for Sale

There are many reasons to buy an exotic pet, whether it is because you've been in love with that particular species for ages or because you collect animals or even because you want to rescue animals from unscrupulous keepers. But finding exotic animals for sale is not that easy.

In this article I will give you 7 different ways to find exotic animals for sale on your own. However, before we dive into them, remember to do your homework first. You need to know the law where you live, the habits of the animal you want, and find a vet that will take care of it.

After all, there is no point in finding the animal you want after a lot of work and finding out state law forbids it, you don't have access to its specialized diet or space for it, or there isn't a vet around that knows how to treat the most common illnesses.

1. Animal Auctions and Fairs

Using the Internet, local newspaper and word of mouth you can find out about specialized auctions. These are more common for exotic cattle, like water buffalos, or exotic birds, particularly peafowl, but there are specialized events where you can find all manners of exotic animals. You may also come across exotic animals in general fairs and auctions.

2. Breeders lists

The yellow pages and the Internet are filled with breeders lists for all sorts of animals. Make a list of all the possible breeders and add them to your maybe list. You may want to buy only from breeders that take good care of their animals or do the opposite to rescue the suffering creatures.

3. Local pet shops

This is a long shot, except for spiders and some reptiles, but local pet shops and specialized shops may point you in the right direction. Some owners hold a prejudice against exotic animals because they think they are hunted from the wild. If that is the case it is best to leave them be than trying to convince them otherwise.

4. Asking other owners

Using the Internet it is not hard to come across someone who already owns the animal you want. You can ask them for tips not only on keeping the animal but finding it. With luck the owner may have a few for sale himself.

5. Announcing your interest

Exotic animals are not just difficult to find, they are also difficult to sell. If a breeder learns about your interest he may contact you. Use internet and other classifieds to announce the world you are looking for that specific pet.

6. Circus and Exotic Pet shows

Contact the circus or exotic pet shows. These may tell you where they got their animals or even sell the older animals they have. Make it clear that you have researched and really want the animal. Sometimes they may think you are an activist trying to trick them and may get offended if they think you think they got captured animals or don't treat their animals well.

7. The Internet

Finally you have the largest resource of all - the Internet. Many auction and sales websites feature a pets section. There are also many specialized resources.
