Diet and Achieving "Washboard Abs"

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

One of the most craved physical features, yet one that is most difficult to obtain, are the much-coveted "washboard abs" or "six-pack" that appear on countless television ads and in the pages of many self-help books. Whether you are looking for a flat stomach or a rippling expanse of muscles below your diaphragm, the project is largely the same - you want to eliminate excess abdominal fat in order to feel more confident and attractive, and look more sleek and sexy.

There are actually two stages to producing a set of washboard abs. One of these stages is to develop your abdominal muscles through specially targeted exercises. There need to be muscles there, built into smooth ripples by the appropriate physical effort, after all, in order for them to be unveiled by the steps you take to melt away your stomach fat and leave only a thin layer between skin and sinew.

The second stage involves eliminating most of your abdominal fat. This is a natural deposit that is present in fit, muscular people as much as in those who still need to build themselves up to their full fitness potential. As such, exercise alone will not rid the body of this fat. It is also crucial to alter diet to ensure that the deposits diminish so that you can show off your abs to best advantage.

Eating the correct nutrition is no easy task, since it does not come neatly labeled to indicate that it will help get your belly fat on the retreat, but you need not rely on trial and error in an age when the wisdom, experience, and science discovered by other people is readily available to you online.

Exercises to build your abdominal muscles

Although it might be imagined that a fully-equipped gym with cutting edge technology is needed to build up a good set of abs, the truth is that calisthenics exercises which use only your own bodyweight for resistance, and perhaps a simple exercise device or two, can build just as fine a set of abdominal muscles in your own home.

The "abdominal V" is a good exercise for tightening and toning the muscles between your ribcage and the tops of your thighs. V sit-ups involve lying flat on your back, with your arms sticking straight up and your fingertips pointing at the ceiling. Simultaneously pull your upper body up and forward as in a normal sit-up, and raise your legs, keeping them straight and pressed lightly together, until your hands touch your legs. Exhale while sitting up and inhale while lowering yourself again.

An alternative is to do the same, but then lock yourself in position with your legs in the air and your hands touching them, and hold still for as long as you can endure. This is known as the "V freeze" or some similar name.

Working out with a power wheel (also known as a toning wheel or ab wheel) is a very advanced abs workout. This involves using a small, sturdy wheel with handles on each side. Kneeling on the floor and bending the body forward parallel with the floor, you grasp the handles and slowly extend yourself out, rolling the wheel ahead of you, then pull back, rolling the wheel back in. This takes a lot of strength and endurance but is probably one of the best ways to produce iron abs.

Diet for eliminating abdominal fat

All the ab building in the world will not produce the visual effects you want, however, if you make no effort to change your diet at the same time. Your six pack will remain coyly concealed behind a curtain of smooth fat unless you eat the proper foods at the same time.

Abs Today is a site which offers solid scientific evidence on the best five foods for melting away your belly fat and revealing the results of your exercise to an admiring world. This special nutrition is designed to control fat deposits and thus allow your workouts to target your belly fat, rather than your metabolism replacing it as soon as it is burned away.
