Do You Understand the Importance of Integrity?

March 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

If character is defined as the decisions you make when no one is watching, then integrity must be the decisions you make when people are watching...AND pressuring you toward immorality for what they perceive as their benefit, all be it short-term. If you desire to be successful in business as well as model Christ's example of integrity, then you better be sure that your acumen does not write a check for you that your integrity can not cash. This is the most difficult building block of redemptive business to set into place, and unfortunately it is the first to be removed in tough situations. It would be better to simply be successful in business and never tell anyone you are a Christian and be generous with your profit, than to proclaim your business as mission intentions and engage in consistent moral failure. This will not be easy and there is no way to truly prepare for the crazy circumstances you may find yourself in, however if you have developed your character as much as your skill, then you can be committed to leading with integrity, no matter the consequences.

The story of Joseph is one such example. This Old Testament hero was determined to honor his unique set of values steeped in Jewish heritage. Though terrible circumstances found the young boy sold into slavery in Egypt, thousands of miles from home, he remained faithful to his convictions and was blessed by God. As the head of all the servants at Potiphar's house, the captain of the Egyptian guard, Joseph worked to honor God. The Bible records that after some time of working in this position, Potiphar's beautiful wife noticed how handsome Joseph was and attempted to seduce him into bed with her often, despite Joseph's constant rejection. Her frustration at his rejection of having sex with her eventually led to Potiphar's wife falsely accusing Joseph of trying to rape her. Joseph was thrown into prison, but because he had remained faithful to God, he soon found himself second in command of all of Egypt and led them successfully through a seven year famine in the land.

In our best of intentions to snatch the coat tails of the elusive American Dream, we have allowed our integrity to fall by the wayside. Instead, we should seek to follow the guidance of Micah 6:8: Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.
