The Mane Event

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

Horses are beautiful creatures and if looked after properly can really stand out amongst others. One of the most important parts to look after is their mane. In many competitions and sports having it kept a certain way can be necessary.

One of the basic ways to style a mane is having it 'pulled'. Whilst this does not sound very nice the animals do not mind having it done and willingly let their owners go ahead with little fuss. It is where small clumps of the hair attached to the neck, hair that is not visible and makes the mane have a curve outwards from the neck, are pulled out so that the hair lies completely flat against the neck.

Another basic way which is primarily seen in British riding is plaiting or braiding the mane. This is done primarily to show off the horse's neck and accentuate its lines when jumping. It is similar to creating the effect a dancer portrays, which is to show off their body and moves as best as possible by wearing their hair up and specific clothing. Button braids are the most common form of 'typing the hair up'. These are usually round and quite large; they usually fit 9 to 15 plaits along the neck. An odd number of these plaits used to be necessary when in show as a tradition, although judges today are more lenient about this.

Horses are used in sport and the first that comes to mind is Polo. Within polo the mane has to be roached or hogged which basically means the horse's entire mane and forelock is shaven completely off. At first thought it does not sound very pleasant for the horse, but when a rider is playing they have to swing a mallet and if it had gotten caught it would really hurt the animal. The tail however is not roached but is braided so it is a lot shorter to prevent injury again.

If you enter into a race, show or game of polo there are many rules and regulations that must be taken into consideration for the way the horse is presented. You also need to know what equestrian clothing is suitable for each event. At the end of these competitions many riders end up with some fantastic looking trophies, cups and rosettes to display their efforts. Taking part or even just watching competitions is great for any enthusiast, and next time you do try to take a look at the different types of manes they are displaying.
