The American Quarter Horse

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 133

There are hundreds of different breeds of horse that have originated from all over the world. Many of them have been brought up to fit a particular sport. One of the fastest in the world is the American Quarter horse and it is a very versatile breed.

The American Quarter horse is known as the fastest short distance sprinter. These are well-known for racing and also perform in rodeo. Some have been recorded at travelling around 55 mph, making a perfect animal to compete. The American Quarter has a very well-muscled body; from a glance you can tell that it is strong. It has a small, short head compared to most and is usually around 15 hands high. There are a few different types to this breed, one of which is noticeably shorter and stockier looking than the others. The taller varieties, which are closer to the thoroughbred, are the ones taken into competitions.

This is the most commonly known breed in the USA, and if you are asked to picture America and horses, visions of old cowboy movies straight away spring to mind. Although these are obviously not real, today in many states, predominantly in the Deep South, hold rodeos. The American Quarter is greatly suited to carrying out cattle work and other western disciplines. These have to be one of the most versatile horses as they can take part in jumping, dressage, racing and even used by the police.

Mounted police are named this because they go around on an animal which is typically a horse, although in Egypt camels are more commonly used. The American Quarter is the predominant species which police use. Mounted police are used especially during times that crowd control is needed, also on special occasions and at the end of football matches. Horses that are used by the police need to be treated like part of the team. During riots when they are used they have to have Perspex coverings over their faces to protect them from harm. The shoe that is fitted with can depend on the environment that they cover; ones that are frequently taken out to urban areas are fitted with rubber shoes, rather than the traditional steel kind.

Making sure that the right shoe is fitted is important for all breeds. Taking care to know that your horse is happy and comfortable in the supplies it has to wear is essential. Nobody would like it if their parents or carer did not look after them properly, so taking good care of any horse is essential to make sure it is a living life contently.
