Modern Day Horses

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

Horses are very clever animals and the communication between a human and their animal can be incredible. You can forget that these used to be wild animals and over years some have become domesticated and learnt to trust humans. Bonds with an animal that you care about can become very strong and trusting just like normal relationships.

Horses are actually prey animals which you would not think of when you see domesticated forms today. In the wild they lived by the rule of fight or flight. They either stood up to another animal to protect themselves or they would run away. Their initial reaction is to flee. If a mother or fathers foal is in danger of being threatened they will stand their ground to protect their young.

Horses are animals of habit and have an excellent memory so if you build up a relationship of looking after your horse and working with it to let it know you care, it will treat you well. You can tell a lot about how a horse is feeling by their body language; they especially use their ears to communicate. If their ears are stood straight up it means that they are alert and in a pleasant mood. However, if ears are flat down and you can see the white of their eyes this will mean they have become angered.

If a horse does not feel threatened by a predator, such as a human, they can become curious and investigate. This is what led to humans teaching them to become tame animals and they have been for thousands of years today. Just like a human, they can tell if you are weak or not taking control so will sometimes push boundaries. As with a child you must take authority and let them know who is boss, in the end they will respect you more for it and you will build a close bond. You cannot have a horse taking you for a ride; it must always be the other way around!

Many people who are totally at ease with these animals can ride bareback, but along with the taming of the animal has come changes to the way that we ride them. If you see a horse without a coat and saddle on, it can be an odd sight as these are designed to make things comfier for both the horse and the rider.
