Getting Your Horse Prepared For a Show

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 138

If you are new to the world of horse shows or have been doing it for years, you will all know that you need to carry out an important grooming regime. You also need to make sure that you look great as well. I have listed some easy steps to follow so you can make sure you are both set to go.

The best place to begin is to start afresh, and the way to do this is to give it a good wash. You should aim to do this a few days in advance so that some of their natural oils can come back through to give their coat a healthy, natural shine. If you cannot commit to this you can still bathe it the day before or on the day of the show. You will just need to use a special product to make the coat appear shinier; just do not put it around the saddle area as this could cause it to slip.

You know yourself how you feel if you have not had your haircut in a long time and a horse is exactly the same. Judges have eagle eyes and can deduct points for minor errors. If you want to make their silhouette look as streamlined as can be you will need to give it a clip. Clipping the hair around the face, muzzle, ears and around the fetlocks on the legs will give it a more defined shape.

If you are a female and are planning on going out for the evening many of us choose to paint our nails. When your horse is being scrutinized they want to have good looking 'nails' too. For many breeds you are required to sand down the hooves and then paint over them with black hoof polish. If your horse does not have black hooves then it is required to use clear polish.

Once your animal is all dressed up and ready to go you must consider your outfit. Just like when choosing an outfit you want the colours to match, so when picking what shade you want to use throughout your outfit, make sure that the colours match. Dark colours on light, e.g. navy jacket whilst riding a white horse, and vice versa draw the most attention. Once you have carried out these steps you and your animal can march on proud looking very smart and well dressed.
