The American Bald Eagle Reclaims the Sky

June 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 196

There is a lovely environmental center near my home. It was carefully planned and paid for by the American Water Company who also assists the county park system in keeping it maintained.

Nearly a decade ago wildlife enthusiasts where thrilled to observe a pair of bald eagles begin housekeeping. Right in the center of a suburban seashore community, the ten-mile long freshwater ecosystem suited these impressive visitors just right. After building their rather messy nest they settled right down to business, successfully raising two chicks a year for the next five years straight.

That was ten years ago. Today, only the male of that original pair remains. He lost his first mate three years ago. This poor widowed icon keened his grief for the world to hear. Joyously for everyone, a new female mate arrived within a month. After helping him with his keening for a week or so, she tidied up their nest and laid her first two eggs.

The following year local environmentalists had a difficult task to perform. Another nest across the state had been blown apart during a violent storm and the chick needed a new home fast. Carefully placing the fosterling into the nest, they retreated to observe. It didn't take long for them to return since they had two youngsters of their own to feed. While the female was offended, raising her partially spread wings threateningly at the baby, the male positioned himself between his mate and the baby.

That foster and it's two siblings were raised and they are still seen in the skies around my home. I've been able to enjoy watching them grow and learn, quite a special experience for me. This season they have three chicks and they came much earlier than expected in January. This is great news for the bald eagle's numbers.

The amazing return from the very brink of extinction is thrilling! Even better, watching as these impressive creatures adapt to a changing world is nothing short of awe inspiring. Yesterday as I enjoyed my walk around the large reservoir my attention was taken by a flapping sound and some rather harsh squawking. Not even ten feet away stood one of the hatchlings from last year right there on the ground. Looking absolutely embarrassed to be seen in this state he gave a more dignified cry and flew right threw the trees. I didn't have a chance to thank him.
