MIL-PRF 680 - Why Consider the Change?

Degreasing by means of a solvent helps with surface preparation in multiple part environments and during equipment maintenance. Applied solvents frequently consist of an alcohol, petroleum, or chlorine type of base. Industrial degreasers remove undesired fluids or contaminants from a particular surface or entire piece of equipment. Application is accomplished by multiple methods, including:

  • Spraying
  • Brushing
  • Whipping
  • Immersion
  • Vapor Degreasing

Application removes items such as dirt, oil, loose particles, and grease from the item surface. Spraying serves as a pre-cleaning operation by removing a majority of contaminants before using additional equipment or can be used as a spot treatment practice. Immersion entails placing the part in a tank that operates much like a washing machine using agitation to rid the component of contaminants. A rack is used upon completion to dry the component. The size of the equipment used in these processes represents the only restriction. Advanced designs include a circulation method, filtering system, and a mechanism for elevation. Brushing or whipping is commonly used to accomplish spot cleaning on a part. MIL-PRF 680 is a solvent developed to replace the older option of PD 680. It offers a comparable price and performance, but does not contain any Hazardous Air Pollutants or HAPs.

What Advantages do Alternatives Provide Over Traditional Industrial Degreasers?

Petroleum based industrial degreasers offer specific benefits during part preparation or equipment maintenance. The emissions are far less than what is experienced when vapor degreasing is used. Reduced ventilation requirements allow for fast setup of a cleaning station. They are safer to handle than their vapor degreasing counterparts, but do have a higher risk of fire due to the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Older versions remain to pose harm to the environment due to containing HAPs. Products with lower flash points, reduced VOC counts, and no HAPs are the safest option for companies requiring these agents.

MIL-PRF 680became an alternative option when PD 680 was cancelled in 1999; however, numerous companies still desire the outdated agent. Both are designed for routine maintenance procedures among other practices. The replacement solvent offers the same performance and is less hazardous than PD 680. It meets all government environment legislation since HAPs are not present. Military, aerospace, and additional industries use these types of industrial degreasers frequently to perform maintenance on equipment. Companies offering this newer alternative are making the effort to provide a comparable price to boost usage over the more harmful PD 680.

MIL-PRF 680is comprised of four petroleum concentrates; its main use is to degrease machine parts when performing maintenance. Type 2 can be applied in a drum washer, immersion tank, sprayed, or with wiping. It is not meant for use in high pressure enclosed cabinets, and agitation by brushing can be performed to complete additional cleaning. Compressed air can be applied to hasten the evaporation process. Type 1 offers the fastest drying whereas Type IV offers the most degreasing power of all versions. Products are being developed or refined to increase environmental and handling safety when degreasing is necessary. This product alteration is simply one example of the more eco-friendly options being offered to businesses today.

Various types of industries rely on some form of an industrial degreaser to complete specific tasks. Tightened restrictions have caused companies to switch to MIL-PRF 680 solutions.
