Indoor Plants And VOCs - 7 Wonderful Plants That Can Make The Air Healthier

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 197

Being able to use some types of house plants to absorb chemicals from indoor air is amazing but true. That they can be both beautiful and functional is such a gift visually and environmentally. Before we get into specific plants, it will be helpful to know a little about the chemicals that they absorb, and where you are most likely to encounter them indoors. Benzene is contained in many detergents, household cleaning products, nail polish remover, gasoline, art supplies, adhesives, tobacco smoke, and inks. Trichloroethylene is found in many solvents, paints, paint strippers, and glues. It can also off gas from clothes that have been dry cleaned. Formaldehyde is used in all sorts of products including fire retardant for fabrics, carpet, pressed wood furniture, plywood, and some types of foam insulation.

Here are 7 really pretty plants to have indoors to help absorb volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from the air.

Aloe Vera---Its spiky-shaped leaves give it a very distinct appearance. The liquid from this plant is often used in lotions and creams because of its ability to heal cuts and burns. The plant itself can absorb formaldehyde and benzene, and in return needs lots of sun.

Azalea---These beautiful plants come in a wide variety of colors. Bringing them into your home will not only add beauty, but will help filter formaldehyde. They need a spot that is sunny and cool. They will do the rest.

Bamboo Palm---This mostly green plant can survive in corners where there is not much light. And that's great because it's excellent at absorbing formaldehyde that may be off-gassing from furniture or carpet.

Now that you're aware of the chemicals and the products that contain them, here are the pretty plants that can help remove these VOCS.

Chinese evergreen---You've probably seen this plant a hundred times. Its beautiful variegated leaves grow in clusters and can add so much on a table, by a window, or in a big pot on the floor.

Gerber Daisy---This beautiful flower is often the star in cut arrangements. And it will add beauty anywhere you place it in your home. It's great at absorbing chemicals such a benzene and trichloroethylene. But remember to place it in a spot where it gets lots of light.

Golden pothos---This is a luscious-looking plant that is a beautiful green with variegated leaves. It grows easily as a vine and will look beautiful around the bathtub or hanging from a basket at any window. The incredible thing about this plant is that it will even survive in the dark. And if all of that is not enough, it will also absorb formaldehyde.

Spider Plant---Even for those who don't profess a green thumb, this plant is pretty easy going. It has beautiful leaves and when it's happy produces little white flowers. It can absorb benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and xylene.

These are only 7 of many other plants that can help clean up indoor quality. What an amazing trade off living with plants can be.

Using a chemical air purifier in addition to these beautiful plants gives you a more measurable way of eliminating fumes from VOCs. See the air purifier designed specifically with airborne chemicals in mind at
