Going Green by Investing in Another Set of Wheels

April 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 158

With this new-found sunny and warm weather my state is experiencing, I am looking to purchase a bike. I had one years ago, but in the process of moving it was donated. Upon informing my significant other, K, the look on his face said enough! Why bike, when you can simply drive?

There are some darn good reasons, and here are a few:

Fitness. When you have no time to spend at the gym, replace a short drive up to the CVS a few blocks away with a bike ride. Not only would the lack of cars help ease the impact on traffic - when the people in their cars are the ones driving long distances - but you'll arrive at your destination feeling alert and positive (such are the benefits of fitness!).

The environment is an obvious one. Cars use fossil fuels, which are riddled with air pollutants that hurt the world around them. The large the vehicle, the more it takes to move it. The more vehicles, the more gases emitted. You help keep things green when you go cycling!

Money! You save money. Currently gas is at an all-time high. Add that to the normal maintenance a car needs, along with insurance, and you have some people paying more for their car than their place of residence. If you're currently not seeing enough "green" then maybe you should consider biking. Admittedly, for a lot of people, it's the financial hit that will be their motivation - when the ideas of "environmental conservation" and "fitness" don't seem to be enough.

Realistically, not all of us live in a nice neighborhood. Bicycling can put you in harms way. There are both malicious people and unaware drivers, so if deciding to bike where you will encounter cars or sketchy people, be safe when you're doing it, or don't do it at all. Bike in the daylight (wear sunscreen), and in reasonable weather - think a crisp fall day or a warm sunny afternoon. Be sure to wear a helmet and be sure your body is in the right way to do the work - I wouldn't recommend biking if you've had recent hip surgery or the like - it's really common sense. If your distance is too great, opt for your car. There are obvious situations where only a car will work; just keep an eye open for the situations where it wouldn't hurt to hop aboard your bike and peddle for a little bit.

So you're considering riding a bike? Read these safety tips first - sometimes being told to wear a helmet and obey the law doesn't cut it.
