Getting Started With Water Purification

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

As more evidence emerges that municipal water treatment facilities may not always be 100% effective, and as more people become concerned with the use of disinfectants like chlorine, it is becoming increasingly common for people to turn to water purification devices within their own homes. This article will provide an introduction to water purification in the home while explaining how to get started if you are interested yourself.

First, it's important to distinguish between the terms water treatment and water purification. The former refers to the process of making water potable while the latter refers to the process of making water free of all contaminants. In other words, treated water may be safe to drink, but it may not be healthy. As an example, treated water may use chlorine as a disinfectant. Purified water, on the other hand, should not have chlorine or other chemicals in it, even in small quantities.

Typically, the water that enters you home is treated water, often with a disinfectant like chlorine, so you need to take some steps on your own if you would like to drink purified water. The easiest place to start is by getting a simple pitcher filter for your kitchen. All you have to do is fill the pitcher with water and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. You can also keep the pitcher in the fridge. PUR and Brita are both popular manufacturers of such devices and it's easy to find something suitable and affordable.

The next step would be to invest in a faucet filter. This can be installed directly on to the faucet and once you have done so, you don't have to worry about filling up a pitcher or waiting for your water to be purified. Again, there are a variety of affordable faucet filter options out there and maintenance is straightforward - you simply need to change the filter every couple of months and there is often a warning light that indicates when to do so.

If you are really ready to get serious about water purification, you can start investing in additional filters, like a shower filter, or even a whole house system. While these involve more substantial investments, there is the satisfaction that comes with knowing that you have pure water throughout your entire house. Many whole house systems can be purchased for $1000 or less and they typically involve a more complex installation process than any of the previously mentioned options.

Whatever path you take to bring water purification into your home, make sure to do your research before investing in a particular product. You can find impartial reviews from sites like Consumer Reports and from the non-profit NSF. You can also visit retail sites where products are sold and look at individual customer reviews. Start with a small investment and see where it leads. You may find that drinking purified water transforms your life.
