How To Start A Lawn Service Business - Choosing Proper Equipment

June 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 186

So you decided to do it. You're going to become one of us. The few, the insane, the self-employed. You quickly lined up a handful of accounts and you need to get some lawn equipment in the next few days.

Which Lawn Equipment To Choose?

1) Mower - There are a variety of lawn mowers you can choose from when you get into the lawn mowing business. When you step into the realm of commercial mowers, keep in mind, these are money machines. They're designed to mow grass quickly and efficiently. They will your largest investment and you can expect to pay $3000 and up for any new entry level mower. The only exception here is a 21 inch commercial mower. Designed for durability and speed, even this tiny machine can set you back several hundred dollars.

2) Weedeater - Also known as string trimmer. Weedeater is actually a brand but since the name is synonymous with the device, you get the idea. It's designed to trim grass and weeds from areas that lawn mowers cannot reach.

3) Edger - You have to choose between an old fashioned edger or a stick edger here. The old fashioned is very powerful but harder to handle. The stick edger looks like a weedeater but has an edger blade instead of string. Its light, versatile and fast. Not as powerful as a traditional edger. The stick edger is used to maintain. If you get involved with areas that have never been edged before, it can be a bit hard to handle with a stick edger.

4) Blower - another choice you'll have to make is between a handheld blower and a backpack blower. The backpack blower is much more powerful and I prefer it myself. If you're budget is limited, you may have to start with a handheld. However, once you use a backpack blower, you'll probably never pick up another handheld blower again.

These are your 4 basic tools for you need when you start a lawn service business. Without this lawn equipment, you're going to have a hard time trying to start a lawn maintenance company.

You can expect to pay somewhere around $300 - 500 for each of the hand tools if you purchase them new from a dealer. The mowers are your biggest investment. You can get started with a small commercial mower for under $1000 brand new. After that though, the sky's the limit. The bigger the mower the higher the price tag.

Your total investment for getting started with brand new commercial equipment can be less around $2000. If you've gone over my info about turning $20 into $70,000, you should have a good part of that money lined up in new business before you even visit the lawn service equipment dealer.
